Lynda could feel John's fingers tighten around hers, which she didn't mind. She felt safe and ground at the moment as they held each other's hand. It was like they didn't want to let go of the other one, though once he got up to pace the floor, he could feel him letting her go and that made her feel like she was losing him all over again. But it wasn't until John sat down next to her that her anxiety about losing John left her, at least for the moment. For a few minutes, she couldn't bring herself to look at John. She already knew that his face was distraught and wet with tears and hurt because of what she had just told him about his two children. Finally, after a silence that once again fell over them, until Lynda got up and moved to his lap. She wrapped his arms around her as she put one arm around him while taking the other hand and began to wipe his tears away. She couldn't help but lean in and softly kiss his cheek and then laid her head against the side of his as she began to softly speak to him. "My love, you did nothing wrong to lose me," she told him. "You weren't being punished for anything you did. What you did to my father, you did out of love and protection for me," she whispered to him as silence fell over them for a while. Both of them to hurt to say much to the other. They weren't angry with each other but rather than the people who caused them to be going through all of this pain right now. Finally, Lynda began to speak to him again. "You were with me the entire time, my love," she told him. "Every kick and every move," she told him. "Let me know that you were there in spirit, holding my hand while I made the difficult decision to protect our babies," she whispered to him softly as she now had both arms around his neck. She just held him as he held her while both let the tears fall from their eyes.

After a while, John finally asked about Candy and what kind of man he came out to be. Lynda sat up and took one of her hands and wiped her tears away as she began to speak about Candy. "He's a strong man," she told him. "He looks so much like you, with your stubbornness and my work ethic," she told John. "He doesn't take crap from anybody and when he love, he loves with his heart and soul," she told him still smiling even through the pain and the tears. "He has both yours and my traits," she told him. "You would be real proud of him John. And he really wants to meet you," she said softly as she wrapped her arms around his neck again. Then she softly kissed the side of his head as she heard him say that he wants to meet his son. "I'll take you to him," she said softly. "But I hope you don't mind that his wife is a black woman," she told him. "Because I have seen the way he looks at her and it's the same look you get when you look at me," she told him with a smile. "She loves him just as much as I love you and he loves her," she added. She knew that John wouldn't mind Candy's wife being black, just as long as they were happy that was all that mattered to him. And Candy was happy with the way his life came out, even if Alexander was still missing from his life. "And for the record, Alexander is just like him and you," she told John with a smile. "And he's as smart as his father and grandfather as well," she said still smiling. "Now, why don't we get some sleep and I will take you to see him once we are well rested," she told him. "What do you say?" she asked him. Between the tears and the lateness of the night, Lynda and she was pretty John was feeling drained and tired and so they definately needed some sleep.

John held her tighter, his voice rough and broken.

"Lynda... I don't give a damn what color his wife is."

He pulled back just enough to look at her.

"If she loves my boy... if she looks at him the way you say she does... then she's family."

His thumb brushed her cheek.

"And Candy..." His voice cracked. "My son wants to meet me."

John swallowed hard, fresh tears slipping down his face.

"I spent all these years thinkin' I'd lost everything. And now you're sittin' here tellin' me I've got a son... a grandson... a family that kept goin' even when I thought my whole world ended."

He pressed his forehead to hers.

"I wanna meet him. I wanna look him in the eye and tell him I'm sorry I wasn't there. Even if it wasn't my fault... I still missed it. His first steps. His first words. The man he became."

John's arms tightened around her again.

"But yeah," he whispered. "We'll sleep. Because if I'm gonna meet our son tomorrow, I don't wanna look like a half-dead fool when I do it."

A shaky smile touched his mouth.

"And Lynda?"

He kissed her softly.

"Thank you... for keepin' them safe. For lovin' them enough for both of us."

Lynda looked deep into John's eyes when she was able to break away from John for a few minutes. Lynda couldn't help by let out a sigh of relief as if a great big weight had been lifted off of her. And she knew she could finally stop thinking that John was going to stop loving her or leave her or anything else that her brain was coming up with, even deep in her heart, she knew he wouldn't even consider doing any of those things, which made her very happy. Lynda looked away from John for a few minutes and then back at him as she began to speak to him again. "You're welcome," she said softly as she let herself once again fall into John's arms, letting the feeling of love and warmth come over her, which allowed her to close her eyes for a few minutes. Finally, she began to speak again to him softly. "John, "I never told you thank you for saving me that day," she whispered to him as he kept holding her. "Thank you for giving me a chance to live and have a family, especially our family," she told him again, this time she gently backed away so that she could looked up into John's eyes. "If you hadn't come to save me, our children, all four of them, would have never had the chance to live too," she added. "So you also helped save Candy and Randi," she added and then a huge smile came over her as she went back to answer everything he had said before, though she couldn't help herself and snuck in passionate kiss.

She then broke the kiss and his hold on her as she stood up. Lynda then ran her hand through through his hair as she stood there in front of him. She then finally began to speak to her husband, starting with Candy's wife. "She does love him, just as much, if not more, than you love me," she told John honestly. "She would bend over backwards for Candy. Abbie is definitely a good one," she said as she moved onto the fact that Candy wants to meet him. "Of course he does," she said softly. "He wants to know everything about you," she told him as she began to play with John's bangs as she kept talking. "He wants to ask you for advice and help with things like building a barn and things like that" Lynda added. "So, you aren't the only one that has things that need to be said," she added and then paused for a few minutes as she looked deep into his eyes. She started to say something else, but she began to yawn and once it's over, she began to speak though this time it was much more heartfelt and warming. "And you didn't lose anything, my love," she whispered. "It just took us a little while longer to come back to each other," she told him with love and a sparkle in her eyes. Then her smile grew even bigger and warmer. "You look sexy, whether you sleep or not," she told him. "Now, why don't you lay down on the bed and then I will crawl in next to you and after the lights go out and we cuddle up next to each other, and then we can talk while we gently fall asleep," she said softly. "Does that sound like a good idea to you?" she asked him with a smile on her face.

John stood quietly as Lynda spoke, listening to every word. The warmth in her eyes, the love in her voice, and the gratitude she carried for something he had never once regretted doing made his chest ache in the best possible way.

When she thanked him for saving her, John was silent for several moments.

He simply looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Then he slowly reached up and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Lynda," he said softly, "you never owed me a thank you."

His voice was low and gentle.

"I'd do it again. Every single time."

John's eyes never left hers.

"You talk about me saving you, but I don't think you've ever understood something."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"The day I found you wasn't just the day your life changed."

His hand settled against her cheek.

"It changed mine too."

He let out a quiet breath.

"Before you, I was just a man trying to find his place in the world. I didn't know what my future was supposed to look like."

His smile softened.

"Then you came along."

He shook his head slightly.

"And suddenly I couldn't imagine a future that didn't have you in it."

When she mentioned their children, emotion flashed across his face.

"You're right."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"If I hadn't found you that day, Candy and Randi never would have been here."

A proud smile crossed his face.

"And I can't imagine this world without them."

He laughed softly.

"Even when they're driving us crazy."

John leaned forward and stole another kiss before she could say anything.

When the kiss ended, he rested his forehead against hers.

"And for the record, I think I got the better end of the deal."

His eyes sparkled with affection.

"You gave me a family, Lynda."

Then he listened as she talked about Candy wanting to meet him and ask him questions.

That brought a surprised smile to John's face.

"He really wants my advice?"

He chuckled.

"Poor boy."

The teasing faded quickly into warmth.

"I'd be honored."

His eyes grew distant for a moment.

"I missed a lot of years with him."

Then he looked back at her.

"But if he'll have me, I'd love to spend whatever time I can making up for it."

When she told him he hadn't lost anything, John's expression softened.

He reached for her hand and kissed her knuckles.

"No," he agreed quietly. "I don't think I lost anything either."

His thumb brushed across her skin.

"It just took us longer to find our way back."

Then she called him sexy.

John immediately laughed.

A genuine, deep laugh.

"Well, now I know you're exhausted."

The look she gave him made him grin even wider.

"I'm kidding."

He stepped forward and wrapped both arms around her waist.

"And since we're being honest..."

His gaze traveled lovingly across her face.

"I don't care if you're dressed up for a fancy dinner or half asleep and ready to fall over."

He leaned down and kissed her gently.

"You'll always be the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."

When she suggested they go to bed and talk until they drifted off to sleep, John's entire expression softened.

"That sounds perfect."

He took her hand and led her toward the bed.

Once there, he climbed in and pulled the blankets back for her.

Then he opened his arms.

"Come here, sweetheart."

His voice had become warm and sleepy.

"We can talk about Candy, Randi, the ranch, the future, or absolutely nothing at all."

His eyes twinkled.

"But I should warn you..."

As she settled beside him, he wrapped an arm around her and pulled her against his chest.

"The second you get comfortable, you're probably going to fall asleep."

John pressed a kiss into her hair and smiled.

"And honestly, after everything we've been through, listening to your breathing while you sleep sounds like a pretty perfect way to end the day."
