Andrew couldn't help but chuckle as he took a few breaths to listen to Ross speak as they waited at the red light. Finally, as the light turned green and Andrew began to drive, he couldn't help but keep quiet and get lost in his thoughts for a few minutes as he kept driving. It was just about then when Andrew drove through the last two red lights, one was stuck on yellow and the other had just turned green, that he snapped out of his thoughts and glanced over at Ross before turning back to the road. And as Ross took a few minutes to breathe himself as Andrew began to speak. "That maybe so, but sometimes your words do form advice and believe it or not, it's not half bad advice," Andrew told Ross as Virginia City was getting smaller and smaller in his mirrors. "So, don't go selling yourself short in the advice department," he added. "Besides, that's the kind of thing that the ladies absolutely love," Andrew said as he continued to chuckle a little bit before getting serious and answering Ross's question. "To be perfectly honest," Andrew said as he was using his most serious tone. "I honest do believe you would make the best husband and father and woman and children could ask for," he told his best friend with a smile on the face as he moved onto what Ross was saying about keeping his ranch hands in line. "Oh, I can solve that problem easy," Andrew said as they were halfway to Ross's ranch. "What you need is a good, hard-working foreman to keep those lazy ranch hands in line," he told Ross. "Pop's been looking for one himself," he added as he then went on to change the subject to his children. They were getting closer to Ross's ranch.
"That I understand, because I went through the same thing with Hoss, though his situation came out a bit different," Andrew said as he was now turning onto the long driveway of Ross's ranch. "But anyway, Peggy doesn't need to be worrying about trying to fit in at her age. She just needs to worry about doing kid things, like playing and doing homework," Andrew said. "You know, stuff like that. Not worrying if she has enough grit to get through the day," he added as he was pulling up to Ross's ranch house. Andrew parked his truck and then after turning the engine off, he turned and faced Ross as he began to speak about his boys after he glanced at them and then back at Ross. "That's true, but boys are a little easier to raise than girls, which is partly why I'm so protective over Peggy," he told Ross. "Besides, Jennie has her own problems she's dealing with and even though I do appreciate any help she can give me with Peggy," he told Ross. "I just don't want Jennie to convince Peggy to grow up faster than her little body, that's all I'm saying," Andrew said with a chuckle and then opened his door to get out. Andrew had one foot on the ground before he stopped and turned to Ross again as he finished up his thought. "And as for the boys," Andrew said as he chuckled. "You want practice with my boys. Then for the weekend, they are all yours, Uncle Ross," Andrew said teasing playfully as he finally got out of his truck, after waking up the boys so they could also get out. Once everyone was out and the truck was unloaded, Andrew turned to look at Ross and began to speak to Ross. "Why don't you take the boys out to the barn to make a fort and I'll call Adam and Hoss and make them get over here as quick as possible," he told Ross. "And I'll also get the food sat out so that we can eat when they get here. Sound good?" Andrew asked with a smile.

Andrew listened to every word that Ross was telling him. And in the back of his mind, Andrew was thinking that Ross was good at listening and giving advice. He was also wondering why Ross just didn't go to college to become a well-trained psychologist. But Andrew kept his mouth shut and his thoughts to himself. Finally, as Andrew was backing out of his spot and driving over to the exit spot before even saying a word. "You know Ross, you are really are one smart rancher and you are good at listening too, which a lot of women find both of those very sexy," he said as he turned into traffic, which brought him up to his first red light, to which Andrew then went on speaking about Ross doing laundry and changing dirty diapers.
"You're welcome, but trust me, I think you would make a great husband and father," he said with a smile on his face as the red light turned to green and they were soon on their way to Ross's house."I'll call Adam and Hoss as soon as we get to your house," Andrew said as he continued driving. Then there was silence that fell over them and nobody talked for several miles, taking them out of town. It was Andrew that finally broke the silence as he spoke about something that Ross said. "You know how you said that Jennie was teaching Peggy how to endure," Andrew said as Ross nodded. "Couldn't she just teach Peggy how to curl her hair or ride a horse? I mean Peggy is only 9 and too young to endure anything," Andrew said with a chuckle both half serious and yet half joking. "But enough about all of that. Let's just concentrate on boy's weekend," he said with a smile as he drove for a while longer before finally turning into Ross's long driveway.

"Well, I'm not the only one," Andrew said softly as he was finally turning into the parking lot of KFC and then headed straight for the drive-thru line. He pulled up behind a yellow car, who still had three or four cars ahead of them, so Andrew put his truck in park until the line began to move, which with the way they were lined up, it wasn't going to be anytime soon. "But I also think that in our own way, everyone tries to carry everyone," he said as he went back to his thoughts. "I mean, take Lynda for example," Andrew said. "She takes so much from Joe and Jennie, just because she doesn't spoil them like Pa and Marie do," he said. "Then you add the pressures of owning a hospital and mix all that with trying to find a heart for Hoss," he said sounding like he was reciting a recipe. "And throw all that in with her other families and you got one strong and badass woman," he said with a smirk as he looked over at Ross and back at the line.
Then, just as the line started to move, Andrew took his truck out of park and began to slowly pull up until everyone else stopped, then he put the truck back into park and went to wait again. As Andrew listened to the rest of what Ross had to say, he knew that majority of the things being said were true, but he also knew that some of the things that were being said were a bit of a stretch, even for Ross. Finally, when Ross was completely done speaking, Andrew cleared his throat and began to speak to him again, taking one topic at a time, starting with him being the oldest. "Yea, well, I know that oldest brother syndrome isn't a requirement, but I can't help but myself and be a little overprotective of my brothers and sister," he said. "You'd be the same if you had little brothers or sisters," he smirked as he then moved onto the next subject, though first he stuck his head out the window to see if anyone was moving, which they weren't. Andrew stuck his head inside and let out a sigh as he looked over at Ross. Then Andrew began to speak to him about the next two subjects, which just happened to be about him tweaking his life and his young sister Jennie. "I know I'm only human," Andrew said softly. "And I know that tweaking my life a bit doesn't mean regrets, though in my case, they are one and the same," Andrew said chuckling as he went on. "But the more I think about my life, the more I realize that there is something in my life that I do wish I could go back and change and decisions I could have been rethought out," he added as he looked up and then realize they were moving again, which Andrew put the truck in drive and moved up, finally getting closer to the spot to order. After moving up, Andrew put the truck in park while they waited. Then Andrew went on speaking about Jennie and Peggy. "I know she's scared. She's scared of a lot of things, but who isn't?" Andrew asked Ross as he was talking about Jennie. "And yes, her and Joe have always been unable to really communicate what they were feeling, but still, you would think after watching the rest of us talking about our feelings and what not that both her and Joe would have picked it up by now," Andrew said with a sigh. "And it's not that I'm rushing them to grow up or anything like that," Andrew said. "But it just seems like that every those two clam up about what they are feeling, they end up getting something new that they always wanted," he said. "It's as if rather than forcing them to talk their problems out, Pa and Marie just give them anything and everything just to make the bad feelings go away," he said not upset but the tone made it sound like he was. "That's not the life I want for my kids," Andrew said as he looked back at his boys, who were still sleeping peacefully. "I want them to be able to express themselves and their emotions, especially Peggy," he added. Andrew then sighed once more as he went on speaking about his children. "The boys have no problems speaking about how they feel, but Peggy is so impressionable, and I'm just afraid that maybe she's picking up some of Jennie's habits, well, more so the bad ones than the good. And yes, I know growing up sucks and there is way more pressure than there really needs to be, but does she really have to rush it?" he asked Ross and then went silent as he looked at the cars ahead of him. He knew they were getting ready to move, so, with his food on the break, he took his truck out of park and but it in drive. Then as the next few cars that were ahead of him went through the ordering spot, Andrew and his group were just one car away, from their turn, which didn't take long and then it was their turn. Andrew pulled up to the ordering box and ordered four twelve-piece buckets of chicken. Two buckets being extra crispy and the other two being original. Then he ordered four large mash-potatoes and gravy, twenty biscuits and four large col slaws. Andrew looked over the menu, making sure there wasn't anything else he wanted to order, which he did add a couple of orders of potato wedges for himself. After he finished ordering, he slowly pulls around as far as he could and then once again puts his truck in park. Then he turned to once again look at Ross and began to speak to him. "And for the record, the boys love still love ice cream and as for Peggy, well, she still loves ice cream, but I usually get much further with her if I buy her some new kind of make up," he smirked. Then Andrew turned and saw that everyone had moved up but then, and then he took his truck out of park and began to move up until he was on the tail of the car in front of him. He could see the window where he was supposed to pay, which was a good thing because he, himself, was getting tired of driving and wanted to get out and maybe take a nap. Andrew chuckled as he pictured Ross trying to do laundry and change diapers and soon Andrew's chuckle turned into him laughing out loud. As Ross gave him a quizzical look, Andrew coughed and then began to speak to him. "Sorry, I was just picturing you doing laundry and changing diapers. It was quite amusing in my head," he told him with a huge smile on his face as he turned and finally pulled up to the window to pay for his huge order. After Andrew used his credit card to pay for the order, they waited for the other cars to move so that they could pull up to get their order. As they waited, Andrew went on to speak once more about Hoss and Laura and then the movies that he had chosen. "You know, sometimes I think Laura has magical powers when it comes to my little brother," he told Ross honestly. "She can make him see the good things about himself in less than five minutes and it took Adam and I years to get him to believe," he told Ross. "And I'm happy that she makes him feel so loved," he told Ross as they inched closer to the pick-up window. "And that's all I want for my little brother, is happy life and she gives that to him without even trying. Plus, she knows every scar he has and once she gets here and finds out about his heart condition, I know she will just love her all the more," he said as they were one just two cars away from the pick-up window. "And you are welcome," Andrew said. "And don't worry, I won't tell anyone you gave me a free session today," Andrew said chuckling and then he got serious for a few minutes. "But seriously, thank you for letting me get a lot of things off my chest," he told Ross. "It really did help," he said as they were now just one car away from the pick-up window. As they were inching closer to the window, Andrew began to speak about the movies he checked out. "I know that, but it's so interesting to watch Hoss watching action movies because the way he watches them. Every love scene that appears in those types of movies, he has a habit of whispering to himself and telling Laura how much he loves her, plus he always has tears in his eyes," he said. "And then when the action part happens, he gets sort of loud," Andrew said as they finally reached the pick-up window. "It's actually quite funny to watch," he added. Then he got serious as he started collecting the food that he ordered. "But seriously, I figured we needed some guy movies and what's more manly or action packed than two movies about war and a Bruce Willis trilogy," he added with a smile as he started handing Ross bag after bag of chicken and sides. Andrew didn't say anything for a few minutes as he looked at all the food once it was all in the truck and it was parked in a parking spot. Andrew didn't say anything for a long while. He was looking as if he was figuring out something. Finally, Andrew looked up at Ross. "I have a feeling we don't have enough food. We might have to order some pizzas or something when we get to your house. Also, we need to get soda, so ordering pizza will help with that," Andrew said. "And then later I can go to the store for more soda and ice cream," he added and then looked up at Ross with a smile. "Ready to go?" he asked Ross. "Because I still have to call Hoss and Adam," he added.

Andrew didn't say much at first. He knew that Ross was right, Andrew was carrying more than he should. But what else could he do? His father was getting up there in age that he couldn't do it anymore, Hoss's health wouldn't let him help at the ranch and Joe and Jennie were still a little too young to do any of the real work without getting hurt, so that just left him and Adm. Andrew let out a sigh as he looked at his friend, then he began to speak to him. "I know that both Adam and I have a lot on our plates, and me more than anyone since I'm the oldest, but still," Andrew said as he paused for a few moments and then going on with his thoughts. "I honestly don't think I would trade my life or do my life any different, though there are a few things that I would tweak though," he said chuckling as he went on to speak about the kids.
"Yea I know," he said with a smile. "And the boys are really good at finding all the soft spots," he said chuckling once more and then he got serious. "You would think that Peggy would be taking notes, even though she's the oldest," he added as force a half a smile and then went on speaking. "I know Jennie scared," he told Ross. "There's a lot going on to be scared about," he told Ross. "But that's not all that's going on with her, and she knows that I know it. I just wish she would let if not me, then someone in on what's going on with her," Andrew said as he was starting to feel a little better about everything. And he was starting to even look better. Deep down, Andrew knew that just talking about everything was doing him some good, but there was still a lot that was on his mind, which he knew he would keep to himself, at least for now. Andrew let out a sigh and then went onto speak about Peggy. "Again, I can understand that too," he said. "But what Peggy isn't stopping to realize is that being grown up means not only mean you get hurt more but the pain stays longer," he told Ross. "And even though many adults use ice cream to ease the pain, it hardly ever works as an adult," he added thinking maybe he just wanting to keep Peggy a little girl a little while longer. "Of course, part of my issue with her growing up as fast as she wants, is the father in my wanting her to stay little for just a little while longer. I don't think I'm ready for her or the boys to grow up just yet," he said as he smiled as Andrew gave Ross a look which he then went on speaking about children and wanting to scream. "Just you wait until you get married and have kids," Andy said playfully. "Then we can discuss good parenting instincts, though I do have to say, having kids when I did, it gives me a good idea of what Adam and I put mom and pop through," he said laughing and then moving onto Hoss. There was a silence that came to both Ross and Andrew as he got his truck started. Then finally, after pulling out of the video store parking lot, Andrew began to speak again about his brother's condition. "We both know that, but first off, if you take Laura completely out of his life, he'll give up and die," he told Ross as he turned onto the highway, heading to KFC. "And secondly, if you try to limit how much Hoss can see Laura, that will only depress him to the point of him giving up," he said. "So, either way, Laura's permanently in Hoss's life," he said as he came up on a red light and then stopped. "But I know Laura and as much as Hoss will want to do for her, she won't let him do anything that would hurt him or cause him to get any weaker than he is," Andrew said. "So, as much faith I have in Lynda to get Hoss through this, I'm also putting some faith in Laura to love him through this, which from the way they acted when we were younger, she's doing just that," he said as the light turned green and Andrew soon was driving again. Andrew stayed silent for a couple of red lights. He was deep in thought for a little while. Once Andrew stopped at the light that was just before KFC, which was down the road, he turned and looked at his boys and then back at Ross. "You know, you should be a psychologist," he said playfully as he went on to talk about what movies he got for everybody to watch. "Well, I got Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan and the Die-Hard Trilogy, all of which will not make Hoss laugh," he said. "But I did get Beauty and the Best, Lady and the Tramp, and Hercules (the animated movie), which he loves Disney movies, so I'm sure that we will get him to smile with one of those movies," he said as the light finally turned green and started off to KFC. "So, I'm sure we will all have a great time, even though I better make sure we have plenty of chicken," Andy said with a chuckle as he flipped on his blinker so that he could let the other cars behind him know that he was getting ready to turn into KFC once the oncoming traffic had gone through.

"So true," Andrew chuckled. "But you can tell that Adam and Jennifer loved each other very much," he told Ross with a smile. "To be honest, it was love at first site when Adam went in for a broken arm and she was his nurse that put his cast on him," he added as Andrew slipped into a sadness that Andrew always seemed to be fighting. Then he lowered his head for a few minutes before finally looking up and over at Ross, who had this look of concern on his face.
That look eased up some of Andrew's worry, though there was still a whole lot hanging over his head and weighing down on his shoulders, but he knew he had to go on in some form or another, for not only his family but for his children too. Finally, Andrew began to speak with a soft smile on his face. "It's not the boys that I have the most trouble with," Andrew said. "If Jennie's not in one of her moods to fight with everybody, then it's Peggy, you know my little girl who's trying to be all grown up," he said with a chuckle. "And with her, she's so impressionable that she would rather skip her childhood and go right into being a teen or young adult," he added as he let out a breath. "Sometimes I just want to go to the barest part of the Ponderosa and just scream until I pass out," Andrew told Ross honestly and then that smile of Andy's came back on his face. "The boys do love their Uncle Hoss and Uncle Adam," he said with a smile. "Though I worry so much about Hoss," he said as he made sure that the boys were asleep as he leaned over and began to speak to Ross. "I'm not supposed to say anything, but Hoss has really been pushing himself lately," he told Ross and then paused. "Don't you dare tell anybody I told you this," he added very, very seriously. "Anyway, the only reason I know Hoss has really been pushing himself is because I've caught him on more than one occasion holding his chest tight," he said. "But I can't get him to stop because of Laura," he added as he finally got out of his truck. "I'll explain more when I get back," Andrew said with a smirk and then he closed the driver's door and went inside the video store and began to look around to see what he could find. After about 30 minutes of just wondering around the store, Andrew found about 10 movies that looked good enough for everybody to enjoy, though one being a musical and Michaela's favorite, but he would watch that one alone. After paying the rental fees for the movie, Andrew finally came out and got into the truck, placing the videos next to him. "So, where were we?" he asked Ross as he started his truck. |
