Laura could once again feel the sting of tears threatening to fall from her eyes as she listened to Monica speak. She knew Monica was right about everything. Her and Eric did find their way back and the proof that their love was meant to be was slowly growing inside of her. She couldn't help but put her hand on her tummy for a moment and then a smile came over her face. Finally, Laura was ready to speak again, though this time sounding a bit stronger than before. "Thanks Monica and I know you are right about everything. This little one that is growing inside of me everyday came from the love that Eric and I share. And I know he'll fight hard even harder now because he wants to be with me and our little one," she told him feeling better, though still feeling a bit defeated. Laura let out a few sighs of relief, like the weight of the world has been lifted off her shoulders. She did, however, sound tired as if she hadn't slept in several days.
"Anyway, I can't wait to see you again Monica and introduce you to Eric," she said still sounding rough but better. "Don't forget to tell Chandler what's going on and that he's not only invited to the wedding, but he better show up or I'm going to kill him," she said playfully and sounding like her old self again. Then Laura changed the subject off her, like she always did when she was tired of talking about herself. "So, you think that Joey will ever tell Phoebe the truth about how much he actually loves her?" she asked now getting back to the gossip and feeling much better about getting a bunch of things off her chest. Laura now felt like she could take on the world, though she also knew she didn't have to do it alone and that not only was her family behind her but her best friends as well. Laura also knew that she had four of the best people in her life and that she had the pleasure of calling them her best friends.

Hearing Monica say all that made Laura feel better. She knew that everything Monica had just said was the truth. Her and Hoss were always meant to be, even though it took them a little while to find each other again. And the baby (or rather babies) that were growing inside of her was the proof of the love they had for each other. Laura let herself cry for a little bit longer before finally composing herself. She knew she had been carrying a lot on her shoulders and just needed some time to unload her worry, and Monica was the best person to help get her through what she was going through. Finally, Laura was ready to speak but first she had to composer herself. Once she did that and wiped the tears away and cleared her throat, she began to speak to her dear friend, this time with a much calmer and even tone to her voice.
"You are so right Monica," she told her finally. "We will get through this together with the help from not only each other but from our family and friends as well," she told Monica. Then Laura became honest with Monica. "I know that I'm not alone, but sometimes I forget that. It's like, everything hits all at once and my brain turns to mush and I can't think or remember anything," she told her, knowing that Monica would understand. "But now that I have unloaded some of the things that was on my shoulders, I now realize just how right you are about everything you said. I want to thank you so much, my dear friend, for letting me unload on you," she added as she moved onto the fact that she was pregnant. "And yes, I'm pregnant and I couldn't be happier. I'm carrying a life (or rather lives) inside of me that was made from love that Eric and I have for each other," she told Monica, now sounding more like herself with a happy tone to her voice. "And I know that once I tell Eric that he's going to be a daddy, he's going to fight even harder just to be around for his child (children)," she told Monica. Then there was a pause on the line as if Laura went into deep thought. She knew that her family was there with her to help her through this, but she really needed her best friend. Finally, Laura began to speak again, and even though she tried her hardest not to, Laura couldn't help but sound a little defeated. "Mon, I know I told you not to worry about coming to Nevada, but do you think you can catch an early flight out here?" she asked her. "I know I have my family to lean on, but I think I'm going to need my best friend with me too," she added.

"We love you too Mon and you're right. I won't let him give up and I won't give up on myself either," Laura said as she started to feel much better, though still had tears falling down her cheeks. But Laura was much calmer now as she continued to speak to her best frirend. "I know that we have the stregnth to get through this," she said. "It's just hard to watch him struggle so much and I can't do a thing to help him," she told her bestie.
"Monica," Laura started and then went silent again. "Remember when I told you that I might be pregnant?" she asked her and then went silent for a moment before continuing. "Well....I took a pregnacy test while the nurse was getting his I.V stuff in," she told Monica and then went on. "It came back positive," she added. "Hoss and I are having a baby," she added sounding a bit happier than before.

Laura took a few deep breathes as she moved the phone away so she could wipe her tears. She didn't want Hoss to see her cry. Finally, she got back on the phone with Monica. After calming herself down, Laura began to speak to her best friend. "You're right Monica, we don't know everything yet," she said. "There's still a few tests that hasn't been performed yet and we are waiting on his blood work to come back," she told her when she heard Monica say that she was on her way.
"Mon, honey, it's not like I'm down the road. Driving to Nevada will take you even longer than a train," she said softly. "I know I'm not alone, I've got you here in spirit and both his and my families," she added as she was now sound a lot calmer. "Look, just hold off on coming right now until I get all the details," she told her bestie. "And I know Hoss hasn't given up....I won't let him," she told Monica.

"I will Moni! And I love you too," she told her bestie and soon hung up so that she could hear everything that the doctor had to say. She knew she still had to tell Monica her thoughts on everything that she just said, and she would, but right now, Laura's time and attention was fixed on Hoss and everything the doctor was saying. As the doctor was giving them both the devistated news, Laura held onto Hoss's hands to keep him calm. She kissed Hoss softly and told him that he was going to be find and that he was only going to go for a few tests and then he would be back. Hoss nodded both scared and disppointed.
Once Hoss was gone to do his tests, Laura pulled out her phone and dialed Monica's number. She knew they had talked about an hour and half ago, but right now Laura knew she was going to need her best friend. Once Monica answered, with tears in her voice, she began to speak to Monica, without giving her a chance to say anything. "Monica, Hoss is dying," she said as the tears kept coming. "His heart is getting worse and there isn't much they can do," she told her friend. |
